  1. A young man was recently in our store. He has worked for Fareway grocery store for many years. As we talked, he commented on how great our downtown looks. We did a major street renovation, new sidewalks, lighting, etc. in 2004. Still looking great today. And that’s what he commented on. He’s worked at 9 different smaller towns throughout Iowa, and he says ours looks great. 90% of our buildings are full, a diversity of businesses, great street scape and good looking buildings. I’m on the Historic Preservation Commission, and we had talked about a couple of buildings that desperately needed brick repair, tuck pointing. Shorter story, this project of maintaining, repair, and sprucing up is about to wind up in August of this year. So we are fortunate that these 15 businesses/building owners stepped up to the plate with their own money, and partnered with the CDBG grant money, along with City funds, and financial institutions – all to maintain our downtown business core and it’s buildings.
And then I mentioned to him and some others I talked with later – we need to remind ourselves, and see how we can tout this success story. I have started to tag some of my business Facebook posting with #BeCherokeeIowa.

    1. Where is this town! When people put this in the Basket, please put the location. I would like to visit Mick’s town, but?????? Thanks and best wishes to all. Karen

      1. Karen, thanks so much for your enthusiastic support. I love to see our people connecting and visiting. Mick hid the name of his town in code: #BeCherokeeIowa for Cherokee, Iowa.

  2. Good point Karen. Yes Cherokee, Iowa. And another item I have been deeply involved in: CherokeeHistory.OnCell.com. You can take tours of our town through your smartphone, laptop, iPad or tablet, or desktop. Makes a great tool for driving around town, taking the downtown walking tour, or checking out our historic illinois Central railroad depot.
